How a mission alarm works

The short answer
A mission alarm clock replaces the dismiss button with a task. The alarm keeps sounding until the task is done, so it cannot be turned off in the half-awake state where you can act but cannot form memories. Roosta ships 17 missions and verifies all of them on the device.
1.You set the alarm
Pick a time and a mission. The moment you save, the schedule is handed to the operating system — not held inside the app — so it survives a restart, a force-quit and a battery saver.
2.It rings
At full volume, on the lock screen, on its own audio stream so silent mode does not suppress it. There is no dismiss button, only a button that starts the mission.
3.You do the mission
Solve arithmetic, walk twenty steps, point the camera at a mug. Verification runs entirely on your device, which is why it works with no signal.
4.It stops, and the streak continues
The alarm ends the instant the mission verifies. The wake-up is recorded, and your streak is recomputed from that history rather than incremented on a counter.

The part that matters most
You are never locked out
This is the objection everyone has before installing a mission alarm, and it deserves a direct answer rather than reassurance. Three rules are built into the wake session and cannot be switched off:
Every mission has a timeout
No mission can run indefinitely. If it cannot be completed, it ends.
The escape hatch opens on a delay you choose
It becomes available regardless of how the mission is going. Set it long for real friction, short if you have early flights — both are legitimate choices, and it is your choice.
A failed mission returns to ringing, never to silence
Failure must never be a way to accidentally switch the alarm off. If the mission does not verify, the alarm is still your problem.
“This app made me miss my flight” is a support ticket and a one-star review. Friction is the goal; entrapment is not.

Why it works
Two reasons an ordinary alarm stops working
Neither of them is volume, which is why buying a louder alarm rarely fixes anything for long.
Sleep inertia
For the first minutes after waking, the brain is awake enough to act but not awake enough to reason or to lay down memories. That is the window in which people dismiss alarms and genuinely do not remember doing it. A single tap fits inside that window comfortably. Arithmetic and twenty steps do not.

Your brain learns to categorise a repeated, consequence-free sound as unimportant and filters it out. This is why a new alarm tone works for two weeks and then stops, and why raising the volume buys progressively less time. A mission that changes — and that has a consequence — does not habituate the same way, which is what the Random mission is for.

What happens if I cannot complete the mission?
Every mission has a timeout, and an escape hatch opens after a delay you set in advance. A failed mission returns you to a ringing alarm — it never silently switches the alarm off — and the escape hatch is always available once its delay has passed.
Can a mission alarm lock me out of my phone?
It should not, and Roosta will not. The escape hatch opens on its configured delay regardless of mission state. Friction is the point of a mission alarm; entrapment is a support ticket and a one-star review, so it is designed out.
Does the alarm keep ringing during the mission?
Yes. The sound continues while you work, which is what makes the mission urgent rather than optional. It stops the instant Roosta verifies the mission on your device.
What if I fail the mission halfway through?
You return to the ringing state and can start again. Progress is not punished with a reset to zero by default, and the alarm never turns itself off as a consequence of failure.
Can I still snooze?
Yes, and you can limit it. Snooze is available on a delay you configure, and Roosta can cap how many times it can be used before a mission becomes mandatory. Snoozing is gently acknowledged, never punished.
Does it work if I do not open the app first?
Yes. Alarms are registered with the operating system when you save them, so they fire whether or not Roosta is running. Swiping the app away, restarting the phone, or a battery saver suspending background work does not cancel a scheduled alarm.
